I’m stuck between the bottle and the bible, heading to a road where they will meet
My ebb and flow is nearly always tidal and one is gonna sweep me off my feet
I was drawn to a light, was almost blinding, I lost my senses, I lost my way
I was flicking through the pages and their findings, is the bible or the bottle holding sway?
I haven’t always been the best man, still I never really thought I was too bad
Sometimes I just stood upon, weak and shifting sand
After someone close and true had taken all I had
The teacher left a mark on the maker, Jim and Jack stood testament to all
The bible and the bottle had me troubled, from heady heights how often do we fall
I’m stuck between the bottle and the bible, between the desert and the deep blue sea
The fork in the road that lays before me, one leads to pain the other misery
I haven’t always been the best man, still I never really thought I was too bad
Sometimes I just stood upon, weak and shifting sand
After someone close and true had taken all I had
I put down the bottle on the table, and now I’m reaching for the holy book
‘Cause now that my bottle’s good and empty, the time has come to take another look

You may say the book is gonna set me free but I never did learn to read
