I’m stuck between the bottle and the bible, heading to a road where they will meet My ebb and flow is nearly always tidal and one is gonna sweep me off my feet I was drawn to a light, was almost blinding, I lost my senses, I lost my way I was flicking through the pages and their findings, is the bible or the bottle holding sway? I haven’t always been the best man, still I never really thought I was too bad Sometimes I just stood upon, weak and shifting sand After someone close and true had taken all I had The teacher left a mark on the maker, Jim and Jack stood testament to all The bible and the bottle had me troubled, from heady heights how often do we fall I’m stuck between the bottle and the bible, between the desert and the deep blue sea The fork in the road that lays before me, one leads to pain the other misery I haven’t always been the best man, still I never really thought I was too bad Sometimes I just stood upon, weak and shifting sand After someone close and true had taken all I had I put down the bottle on the table, and now I’m reaching for the holy book ‘Cause now that my bottle’s good and empty, the time has come to take another look Forgive me now but you’ll see that I am grinning, you know damn well the bottle’s winning You may say the book is gonna set me free but I never did learn to read I haven’t always been the best man, still I never really thought I was too bad Sometimes I just stood upon, weak and shifting sand After someone close and true had taken all I had

When I woke up that morning my head was filled with pain I couldn’t walk and I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t think I could only strain, to see you Just shoot me down now let me be, forbidden fruit from forbidden tree Seeing you from a distance, cuts me deep inside Seeing you from a distance, oh babe I can’t describe, the feeling Just shoot me down now let me be, forbidden fruit from forbidden tree Wine in hand you turned away, ends my belief we was the same The pill I swallow cut me deep inside, you sit back and enjoy the ride Just shoot me down now let me be, forbidden fruit from forbidden tree Forbidden fruit from forbidden tree When I woke up that morning my head was filled with pain I couldn’t walk and I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t think I could only strain, to see you Just shoot me down now let me be, forbidden fruit from forbidden tree

SHADY GLEN 03:41
Shady Glen was a wanted man. With a price on his head 25,000 if he was handed in alive 50,000 if he was dead They found him guilty of not telling the truth For which he was gonna die Cause in that little old backwater town There was nothing worse than a lie Shady Glen, Shady Glen, this is the tale of Shady Glen From some old wanted poster They remembered his face That image well it hung around the town In many a place Then some loathsome soul tried to gun him down Somehow he rode away With bullets stuck in his back and side Now by a stream he lays Shady Glen Shady Glen, this is the tale of Shady Glen Laying there so peacefully, surrounded by light Breathing sweetness in the air no fight left to fight ‘So if this is how it’s got to be?’ He smiled one more time, ‘Then I shall gladly die for any of my crimes.’ Then he closed his eyes Price on his head a wanted man He made not a sound The whole truth and nothing but Someone had put words in his mouth Shady Glen was a wanted man With a price on his head 25,000 if he was handed in alive 50,000 if he was dead Shady Glen Shady Glen, Your word’s as good as nothing, in the end Shady Glen, Shady Glen this is the tale of Shady Glen

NEVER KNEW 03:39
I never knew love till I knew loss, I never knew loss till I knew love I never knew strength till I knew fear, I never knew fear till I knew strength I never knew hot till I knew cold, I never knew cold till I knew hot I never knew right till I knew wrong and I never knew wrong till I knew right I’m just a little speck in the universe Living in a world of unintelligent life And we’re only here for a short, short, time And if that’s all there is well it suits me fine I never knew day till I knew night, I never knew night till I knew day I never knew full till I was empty, I never knew empty till I had none, I never knew sour till I knew sweet, I never knew sweet till I knew sour I never knew bad till I knew good and I never knew good till I knew bad I’m just a little speck in the universe Living in a world of unintelligent life And we’re only here for a short, short, time And if that’s all there is well it suits me fine I never knew truth till I knew lies I never knew lies till I knew truth I never knew black till I knew blue and I never knew a thing till I knew you I’m just a little speck in the universe Living in a world of unintelligent life And we’re only here for a short, short, time And if that’s all there is well it suits me fine

STUMBLE 02:50
Well I walk down a road made of misery, With every step I take I feel the death of me Horizon is too far. The journey is too long. What am I running to? What am I running from? I stumble on. I stumble on. Is there an inner fog? Some kind of coloured haze? First one here to admit, that I’ve seen better days Try keep my head up, try struggling on, what am I running to? What am I running from? I stumble on Now my refection, it is a stranger Who’s that in front of me? I’m sensing danger. With unknown quantities, with all hope gone What am I running to? What am I running from? I stumble on. I stumble on I stumble on. I stumble on and on

I gave you my shoulder to cry on You wiped your nose on my sleeve When we made love you left the light on And you told me to turn it off when I’d leave Try as I might, I can’t get it right, baby I’m down on my knees You are so hard to please I turn the page on another cliché, I offered you my heart saying take it At night I kneel by my bed and I pray, to the God in the sky that you ain’t gonna break it Try as I might, I can’t get it right, baby I’m down on my knees You are so hard to please I swallowed my pride I‘ve nothing to hide I’ve taken all that I can You have no compassion, and my heart is crashing, I know that you don’t understand Try as I might, I can’t get it right, baby I’m down on my knee You are so hard to please
7.
Something in your heart, Your chest heaves high and low Numbness in your head Little did you know? Sadness in your eyes Tears that grow and grow Pain is in your smile Little did you know? Your love was no longer your love Your truth was no longer true Your lover was no longer Loving you Questioning yourself And answering too Cause no-one’s there To answer you Sometimes you see Good through bad She was the worst Still the best you had Your love was no longer your love Your truth was no longer true Your lover was no longer Loving you
8.
I only want your love, I only want your love I only want your love tonight Liquor don’t interest me, ‘cause I only want your love I only want your love tonight I only want your love, I only want your love I only want your love tonight You gotta understand, that I’m your only man And I’ll do all I can tonight I only want your love, I only want your love I only want your love tonight I only want your love, I only want your love I only want your love tonight The rain is falling down, it only makes me want you more The rain is falling down tonight The beating of your heart, I feel it like a jungle drum And mine it beats with yours tonight And we will be as one, and we will be as one And we will be as one tonight

WRONG SIDE 03:52
I was always, standing on the wrong side I was always, standing on the wrong side of love But now I see, it’s all so clear The sides have changed now you are here I was always, waiting on the wrong side I was always, waiting on the wrong side of love But now I see, it’s all so clear I wait no more, now you are here There are no sides no more, there are no sides no more There are no sides no more ‘cause of love, love I was always falling on the wrong side, I was always falling on the wrong side of love, But now I see, my falling’s through, my last fall, was in to you

MUDCAT ROAD 04:09
Tobacco burning in a barn Wild geese swimming in a pond Fields of corn go on and on Heading down to Mudcat Road The house she takes us back in time There's sweetness hanging in the air The songs we sing go on and on Heading down to Mudcat Road Every single city, the people seem so busy Somehow time just disappears when we hit Mudcat Road Once again you prove to me I got so much to learn But my heart is always open, when we’re on Mudcat Road An eagle circles round and round It’s raining but the air is warm Walking with you slowly now All alone down Mudcat Road Everyone is tucked inside The courthouse, square, the streets are bare The misty road is bathed in moonlight We’re all alone on Mudcat Road Mudcat Road, Mudcat Road, Mudcat Road, Mudcat Road

ONLY A LADY 03:14
You’re only a lady, a long way from home I'm just a man, and we're both all alone If you've got a mountain, I'll climb it. If your rainbow's for riding, I'll ride it If your river's too deep and too wide to swim. I'll jump straight in If you've got a mountain, I'll climb it If there's a needle in your haystack I'll find it And if your river's too deep, and too wide to swim I'll jump straight in I'll sink or swim You know of the feelings that come in the night? When you're aching all over till morning is light If you've got a mountain, I'll climb it If there's a needle in your haystack I'll find it And if your river's too deep, and too wide to swim I'll jump straight in I'll sink or swim Yeah I'll sink or swim

about

During mid 2020, in the middle of Victoria's (Australia's) second Covid-19 lockdown, I stumbled on an old photo which inspired me to work on some cowboy-tinged songs with my brother Paddy. I sent him ideas and demos and once lockdown was finished we caught up and recorded them. A lot of them were co-writes with our father Barry who has from time to time fancied himself as a cowboy. Forbidden Fruit was an old song I wrote with a mate of mine, Marcus Chooka Isles.

Paddy and I are no Noel and Liam (we still talk to each other,) or Tim and Neil (legends,) but while we were recording these songs it did feel like us Swayn Boys rode pretty tall in the saddle.

I am in a band called THE WARRAINS and I also do solo stuff every now and again. Sometimes I write by myself but I'll often collaborate with my poet father Barry.
I have an alt country kind of thing happening but wouldn't say that's all you're gonna get.
